Verdiem SURVEYOR

SUMMARY

SURVEYOR is the most advanced solution on the market for helping global businesses reduce their energy consumption and IT carbon footprints. With SURVEYOR, organisations are able to manage, measure and reduce their energy consumption on PC networks.

Key Features and Benefits

A typical PC consumes 600 kWh of electricity a year. SURVEYOR reduces that energy consumption by over 30% or by an average of 200 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per PC annually. In a PC-intensive organization, this typically represents a 3-6% annual reduction in total electricity consumption, saving an average of £20-£30 per PC annually. Additionally, by eliminating PC network energy waste, organisations also reduce associated CO2 greenhouse gas emissions. For example, a 10,000 PC network can save over 2,000,000 kWh of electricity - every year. These annual savings equate to:

  • £200,000 annual savings
  • Reduction of 1,264 metric tons of CO2
  • 274 passenger cars not driven for one year
  • 143,933 gallons of fuel saved
SURVEYOR works by intelligently placing PCs into lower power settings when not in use. The software employs a centralised control and management approach to controlling the power settings residing within each networked computer. This maximises energy savings without interfering with end-user productivity or desktop maintenance. SURVEYOR features comprehensive reporting capabilities to quantify savings, is easy to implement, requires minimal maintenance, and delivers payback typically in 18 months or less.

SURVEYOR 5.0\\\'s Enhanced capabilities enable users to:
  • Maximize energy savings with increased reliability
  • Minimise administration
  • Optimise power management and centrally administer
  • Gracefully manage applications
  • Manage laptop computers differently
  • Utilise all Windows Vista power settings
  • Seamlessly provide remote desktop access
  • Provide reliable patch management

Maximise energy savings with increased reliability
A common occurrence in some environments is a condition where PCs do not transition to the lower power state. This is often called Insomnia and can be caused by rogue applications, spurious network, CPU or disk activity. This problem can be hard to resolve since the concept of idle time cannot be configured at the OS-level. SURVEYOR implements a complementary idle timer that can be defined at a granular level with threshold settings for CPU, disk and network activity. SURVEYOR Idle Timer can then be set to supplement the Windows Idle Timer and enforce sleep or hibernate. The result is that PCs reliably comply with power policies and maximising of energy savings.

Minimise administration
With centralised configuration of OS-level power management settings, administrators can configure PCs for the appropriate Wake-on-LAN, Wake-on-Keyboard and Wake-on-Mouse functionality. These can be configured for all machines from a centralised console with just a few checkboxes.

Optimise power management and centrally administer
Significantly reduce administration and maintenance with consolidated views of client configuration and exception summary across groups of machines. Also included are reports that highlight specific periods of machine activity and inactivity, periods of highest and lowest power consumption, and details of power profile settings across all power groups.

Gracefully manage applications
A new centralised facility - Power State Transition Manager - enables the definition of any script-based action to be performed prior to PC transitioning into a lower power state. An easy to use scripting facility allows administrators to save data in open applications, backup applications or gracefully shut them down.

Also, computers can be prevented from shutting down if certain applications are active on the machine. In addition to out-of-the-box scripts for common office applications, administrators can augment their library with custom scripts written in either JavaScript or VBScript.

An important security feature in the scripting function is a secure, signed certificate infrastructure. Administrators can either use the built in Verdiem certificates or assign their own corporate certificates to ensure that each client/PC only runs authorised scripts.

Manage laptop computers differently
Auto-grouping rules can be used to setup groups and associated power profiles specific to laptop computers. Together with SURVEYOR\'s configurable facility that allows end-users to override a power management scheme, administrators can easily accommodate the nuances of mobile usage patterns.

Support for all Vista power settings
All new power settings in Windows Vista are available for use in defining the smart profile scheme. These enhanced power settings can now be used in SURVEYOR\'s central management interface to administer Vista specific machines.

Seamless remote desktop access
With SURVEYOR\\\'s Wake-on-Web product, users can easily wakeup their machine for unfettered access regardless of the enforced power policies.

Reliable patch management
Environments with SMS/SCCM can benefit from SURVEYOR Wake-Up for SMS. This product allows administrators to synchronously wakeup machines that have pending advertisements. Administrators can also schedule machines for wakeup even though they are not Wake-on-LAN capable. In addition, policy refreshes can be triggered after wakeup to accelerate the software update.
